You may have only experienced one job that deals with the weather and that is the local weather reporter. There are a lot more jobs that must be knowledgeable about the weather or deal with the aftermath of the weather.

Civil Engineers work with other city planners to create safe water controls to prevent city flooding. Or they may focus on city designs that help manage snow removal. They need to understand the impact of weather on the way a city functions.
Climatologists are different then meteorologist, as they study the weather patterns and trends over a long period of time. This can help with urban design or planning for long term agriculture development.
NOAA the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration is a government agency that employs many of these weather experts that can safeguard the public by predicting hurricanes or flooding. They are the researchers working to understand the impact of the changing ice burgs on our sea levels. They are also important in setting the rules businesses must follow to protect our water resources when building and operating their facilities.
