Registered Nurse

R

A Registered Nurse is a person who provides and coordinates patient care, educates patients and the public about various health conditions, and provides advice and emotional support to patients and their family members. Nurses are needed in a variety of work environments such as elder care homes, doctors offices, clinics, hospitals, private homes and schools.

Nurses are the heart of healthcare. They are critical for both patients and doctors.

A nurse’s responsibilities and title varies, depending on the type of work they do. Nursing categories include addiction, cardiovascular, critical care, genetic, neonatal, general practice and rehabilitation. Someone who wants to be a nurse should also possess physical stamina, and critical thinking, communication, and organizational skills. A nurse must also be emotionally stable, compassionate, and detail oriented. The role of a nurse is often the connection between a doctor and a patient for communication and fact finding.

High school students should take college prep course that include algebra, English, biology, and chemistry. Entry-level jobs typically require a bachelor’s degree, especially for administrative positions, research, consulting, and teaching. Nursing education programs include courses in anatomy, physiology, microbiology, chemistry, nutrition, psychology, and other social and behavioral sciences, as well as liberal arts.

Registered nurses must graduate from an approved nursing program and pass the National Council Licensure Examination before becoming licensed. Additional state licensing may also be required.

Similar jobs include physician assistants, licensed practical or vocational nurses, medical technologists, midwives, and nurse practitioners.
